Medicare Supplements:
Medicare supplement plans, also referred to as Medigap, are insurance policies that help to pay for the “gap” in coverage from Medicare A & B. These policies are sold by private insurance companies that are licensed to sell Medicare plans and will help cover deductibles, copays and coinsurance that Medicare does not cover. You may even find plans that offer limited coverage overseas. These plans are available to people with Medicare Parts A and B. When you enroll into a Medicare Supplement plan you can choose any stand-alone Part D plan to pay for prescriptions as you would not pair a Part C plan with Medicare Supplement.
Medicare Advantage:
Medicare Advantage is also known as Medicare Part C and is an “all-in-one” alternative to original Medicare. However, unlike Parts A & B, Medicare Advantage plans are offered by Medicare-approved insurance companies. These plans must offer at least the same level of coverage as Medicare Parts A & B but many will include additional benefits. These additional benefits may include things like: prescription drug coverage (Part D), dental, basic vision, hearing services, gym memberships, over-the-counter medicines, transportation services, wellness programs and more.
Medicare Plan D:
The fourth letter in the alphabet soup of Medicare is Part D, which provides prescription drug coverage. This coverage is provided by insurance companies with Federal government contracts. Part D is either purchased as a standalone plan or it is included with many Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans. Before we get into the details of Medicare prescription coverage, it is important to understand that when we say “covered” that does not imply that the beneficiary has no financial responsibility.
